Tax Accountant

Reporting to the Tax Supervisor, the Tax Accountant will perform the following tasks to assist the tax department in the timely and accurate completion of quarterly tax provision calculations and filing of all federal, state, and local tax returns ensuring compliance with governing taxing authority requirements, which supports the growth of the business and Carriage’s overall mission.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of year-end tax provision computations in accordance with ASC 740, including year-end true ups, tax account roll forwards, and financial statement footnotes.
  • Assist with the preparation of US federal, state, and local corporate tax returns using tax software.
  • Preparation of US federal and state quarterly and year-end tax estimates.
  • Assists with federal and state audits, including managing and resolving tax notices from federal and state agencies.
  • Liaise with internal company functions to gather information needed for tax calculations.
  • Interact with governmental agencies, including IRS and state agencies, as necessary to resolve compliance issues, audits, and disputes.
  • Provide ad-hoc support in other specific as needed, including indirect taxation.
  • Train and mentor tax staff regarding tax compliance, research and consulting matters.
  • Adhere to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and complying with regulatory requirements as directed by governmental agencies in the reporting of all tax accounting information.
  • Reconciles tax payable accounts and discrepancies in tax data.
  • Research tax treatment in new jurisdictions and maintain statutory rates in current jurisdictions.
  • Lead location reporting for cash transactions to tax authorities.
  • Analyzes all tax accounting reports for accuracy and compliance.
  • Responds to SOX and internal audit requests as needed.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in Accounting required. Masters in tax preferred.
  • Minimum two years’ income tax, ASC 740, and ASC 718 experience in public and/or industry.
  • Experience working tax software. Onesource, BNA, and PowerBi experience preferred.
  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) preferred.
  • Sales and property tax experience a HUGE plus.
  • Detail oriented and ability to work in a team setting.
  • Ability to meet daily deadlines and perform tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to analyze data and provide recommendations.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and resolve issues with minimal supervision.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and working environment through organization and communication.
  • Ability to simultaneously handle multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and exercise good judgment.
